From the District Superintendent

The Centennial of the Church of the Nazarene is scheduled to be celebrated worldwide on October 5, 2008. While a lot has changed in our world and the church over these 100 years, the one thing that never changes is God's Word. Our church was part of the Holiness movement of the 19th and early 20th century which saw many groups spring up and ultimately some band together to form the Church of the Nazarene.

I feel it is import for us to use this occasion to revisit our roots and to try to understand the principles and convictions our predecessors held that led them to start our great church. Now through October, I will use my E-Tidings space to give you a glimpse into our past. For more information regarding the church's centennial, please visit: www.nazarene.org/ministries/administration/centennial/display.aspx

ONE

The Nazarene Centennial is an anniversary, not a birthday. It marks a marriage that linked existing families and created a new one. A century ago, the Nazarenes were a predominantly American family with relatives in other countries. Today we are an international family of congregations on every inhabited continent. No single language, race, or nationality claims a majority of our members. As an expression of the Holiness Movement and its emphasis on the sanctified life, our founders came together to form one people who then went forth into the world to become a people of many cultures and languages.

GENESIS OF A CHURCH

The Church of the Nazarene was neither the invention of one person or group nor the expression of merely one idea. A unique child of the Wesleyan-Holiness Movement, it arose from a widespread yearning among a portion of the Holiness people who had become estranged from the Methodist Episcopal Churches and sought new connections and united action beyond their local ministries.

The core of early Nazarene identity derived from the Wesleyan-Holiness Movement, which originated in the 1830s. Its leaders sought to bring John Wesley's doctrine of Christian perfection to a place of honor in American Methodism. The movement was spurred initially by Rev. Timothy Merritt of Boston, publisher of The Guide to Christian Perfection magazine, and Mrs. Phoebe Palmer, a significant lay leader in New York City, then the capital of American Methodism. Palmer directed the influential Tuesday Meeting for the Promotion of Holiness which met weekly in her parlor, and for over 30 years her preaching and writing encouraged the expanding Holiness Movement in the United States, Canada, and the British Isles. The National Camp Meeting Association for the Promotion of Holiness was founded by Methodist ministers in 1867, marking the beginning of the movement's second generation. Evolving into the National Holiness Association (NHA), it inspired scores of local and state Holiness associations. Then, in its third generation, the Dr. Phineas BreseeWesleyan-Holiness movement splintered, divided by race, regionalism, differing views on the church, baptism, the Second Coming of Christ, women's roles in the church, and loyalty to Episcopal Methodism.

The Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene originated as committed leaders strove to unite the splintered holiness factions. Phineas Bresee (photo right) , a native of the state of New York, served as a pastor and district superintendent for a quarter-century in the Midwest and completed his ministry on the Pacific coast. His service as a vice-president of the NHA stirred a yearning to promote unity among Holiness people. C. B. Jernigan was instrumental in uniting Holiness factions from Georgia to New Mexico, and C. W. Ruth, a leading NHA evangelist, helped acquaint all constituent groups that united in 1907 and 1908 to form the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene. The Nazarenes became (with the present-day Wesleyan Church) one of two great ingathering denominations that eventually drew together a majority of the Holiness Movement's independent strands. By the close of 1915, the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene embraced seven previous denominations.

West Flint Team Helps with Flood Disaster Relief in Iowa

Iowa Flood ReliefDr. David Bowser led a team of 16 people to assist the people affected by recent flooding in Iowa. The project included working in Oakville, Iowa on houses that were flooded. The West Flint Team cleaned out three houses and worked in the community by distributing Crisis Care Kits and Flood Kits.

Iowa TeamThe team also spent time ministering to Rev. Claude Perhealth while we worked in the community affected by the flooding. The WFN Team stayed at Burlington First Church of the Nazarene in Burlington, Iowa in their Family Life Center area.

Dr. Bowser plans on taking 1 or 2 more additional teams to assist in the clean-up efforts in Oakville. These teams will continue to clean out houses and begin the early stages of restoration of properties where it is appropriate.

"The response at West Flint has been overwhelmingly positive and we are anticipating future opportunities to help." said Dr. Bowser. " The teams that we bring are self-contained and do not require any local church or district funding to make them possible."

EMD Kids Shine at Regional Children's Quiz at ONU !

From Karla Tobey
Our quizzers from across the district did a phenomenal job at the Regional Quiz on June 7th!!! They really showed the region what they know about God's Word, especially the book of Genesis.

In the Red Level (usually grades 1-3), there were 185 quizzers from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. From that group, 22 kids received a high enough score to receive trophies and be considered in the top quizzers on the region. TWO of those 22 were from the Eastern Michigan District - Chelsea Martindale from Howell (she didn't miss any questions at all the entire quiz year) and Hannah Northrop from Howell. The actual Eastern Michigan District Team for the red level placed 5th out of 10 districts present.

In the Blue Level (usually grades 4-6), there were 182 quizzers from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. From that group, 29 kids received a high enough score to receive trophies and be considered in the top quizzers on the region. FOUR of those 29 were from the Eastern Michigan District - Luke Rossol (Orchard Lake), Maggie Bungard (Orchard Ridge), John Michael Havel (Rochester First), and Meg McGuire (Rochester First). The actual Eastern Michigan District Team for the blue level placed 3rd out of 10 districts present, and each of the 5 quizzers on the team received a trophy.

THE PROBLEM OF BEING STUCK, PART 4
THE PROBLEM OF A LACK OF VISION
Haggai 2:1-9

Robert Coleman says in The Master Plan of Evangelism that Jesus' life was ordered by His objective to reach the world. "Everything He did and said was a part of the whole pattern. It had significance because it contributed to the ultimate purpose of His life in redeeming the world for God. This was the motivating vision governing His behavior. His steps were ordered by it. Mark it well. Not for one moment did Jesus lose sight of His goal."
Allen Hadidian - "Discipling others is the process by which a Christian with a life worth emulating commits himself for an extended period of time to a few individuals who have been won to Christ, the purpose being to aid and guide their growth to maturity and equip them to reproduce themselves in a third spiritual generation."
Why is the church not doing that? Why is the church able to grow a little, decrease a little, grow a little, decrease a little-but unable to show sustained New Testament growth. There are at least six problems that a church that is stuck faces. This month we will look at one of them. In the past months we looked at THE PROBLEM OF LEADERSHIP, THE PROBLEM OF SIN IN THE CONGREGATION, THE PROBLEM OF A LACK OF SPIRITUAL PROTECTION. This month we will look at THE PROBLEM OF A LACK OF VISION from the prophecy of Haggai 2:1-9.

1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: 2 "Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them, 3 'Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing? 4 But now be strong, O Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD. 'Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,' declares the LORD, 'and work. For I am with you,' declares the LORD Almighty. 5 'This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.' 6 "This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD Almighty. 8 'The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty. 9 'The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,' says the LORD Almighty. 'And in this place I will grant peace,' declares the LORD Almighty."

THE PROBLEM OF LACK OF VISION Vs. 2:1-9

THE FORMER GLORY OF THE HOUSE OF GOD Vs. 1-3. In order for us to catch the vision of God for the church, we must remember the former glory of God's church. This is not an appeal to engage in reminiscence of the way it used to be, but it is a plea for the people of God to resolve to return the church to the functions to which the scriptures point us. The glory of the house of God has always been in the righteousness of his people who live lives worthy of the Lord.

THE CHARGE TO BE STRONG IN YOUR FAITH IN GOD'S PROMISES Vs. 4. The power of God is diminished only in the lives of persons who have stopped believing in him. When our circumstances, our situations, and our problems become bigger than our God, we are defeated. Listen again to the words of the Lord to us, "Be strong, you leaders, be strong, you pastors, be strong, all you people of the land, for I am with you." Nothing is impossible with God.

THE COVENANT OF WORK AND COURAGE THAT REMAINS Vs. 5. God's covenant is his promise to us to perform faithfully what he has promised to do, providing that we keep the provisions that belong to us. Two conditions are given to us in order for God to undertake on behalf of his church. We must work and we must not be afraid. If we are afraid we will not work. If we will not work, our fear will grow and grow and grow. What shall we fear? Is there anyone greater than our God? No, no, a thousand times no. He is unparalleled in his power, his wisdom, his glory, and his love.

THE SHAKING OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS COMING VS. 6-7. God has promised to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. He will shake the nations, until the inglorious, the sinful, the evil will be shaken out of his kingdom. Then he will fill his church with his glory and with the glory present in the Spirit-filled church. He will have a church as he purposed it to be.

THE PROMISE OF GOD TO GRANT GLORY AND PEACE VS. 8-9. God's promise to the church is significant. We concern ourselves with the finances of our families and of the church, while he declares that all of the gold and silver belong to him. We concern ourselves with the condition of the church, while he says that he will bring the church to a glory greater than we have ever known. We concern ourselves with establishing world peace, while he announces that he will grant us peace. We simply must live in close relationship with him through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God's vision for our church will result in four spiritual and physical activities in the church.

1. Prayer is the key: The standard by which we will determine success in the Church of the Nazarene is the prayer meeting. We cannot see souls won to the Kingdom of God without the power of God in answer to prayer. PRAYER ought to be an integral part of everything we do as a church. We will focus attention on prayer and fasting as one part of our strategy to make Christlike disciples, one vital, life-changing part.

2. Compassionate ministries are not optional for the church that seeks to be like Jesus. The world is full of needy people. If the church understands how to intervene in the midst of the needy of society, it will always have a place of influence for Christ. A center of compassionate ministries will join our hearts to the heart of God. COMPASSION must start somewhere. If we are not able presently to build a compassionate ministries center as we envision, then we must do what we can.

3. Evangelism is the heart of the church of Jesus Christ. A church that does not evangelize does not win new believers and is destined to die. Evangelism must be intentional and widespread, reflected in every ministry of the church. EVANGELISM must be built into every ministry of the church, including discipleship ministries. We must reach other persons that we are not now reaching through a ministry to people who are hurting using ministries such as Celebrate Recovery. We need to reach the broken homes with ministries such as Divorce Recovery and Divorce Recovery for Kids.

4. Discipleship must include three elements: 1) Instruction so new believers can learn biblical teachings and life application; 2) Connection so they can relate to other believers and support each other through mutual accountability; 3) Modeling so they can see what a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ looks like. Discipleship occurs one on one and in small groups. DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS must function as open discipleship small groups and ought to include the following activities:
1. Lifestyle Training - training in becoming fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ; interactive instruction so new believers can learn biblical teachings and life application.
2. Intercessory Prayer - modeling praying for the lost to come to Christ and believers to be sanctified;
3. Fellowship - sharing our lives, participating in faith adventures, and growing in grace; connection so they can relate to other believers and support each other through mutual accountability.
4. Evangelism - inviting and winning the unchurched to Christ; modeling so that the unsaved and new believers can see and experience how a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ lives.

CONCLUSION: Jesus says to us in Matthew 28:18-20, 18 "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
There are five principles that we should embrace in order to make that happen. Our first priority as the Church of Jesus Christ ought to be making Christlike disciples who make Christlike disciples who make Christlike disciples.... I want to keep these principles in front of you. They are as follows:
1. PRAYER AND FASTING
2. THE AUTHORITATIVE WORD OF GOD
3. THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
4. GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY
5. RELATIONAL MULTIPLICATION
Jot me an email note with any questions or suggestions at scnnazpastorgary@charterinternet.com. God is growing a great church in Eastern Michigan. We are blessed to be a part of his great kingdom work!
Please make a point of speaking to me about your ideas and thoughts. I want to listen to you.
